Anna Eng
22:45
yes
Amy Preut
22:50
yes I’ve used quick mail
Cyrus Ginwala
22:50
yes
Daniel Ciomek
23:03
I use quick mail all the time… too often… is it possible to send out a text message instead. Students don’t read the emails.
🐈
23:24
Messaging via SMS is not available
Joan Wong-Kure
23:29
Great feature! Thanks!
Daniel Ciomek
23:34
Awesome!!! Scheduling is great! Big Plus
Kenji Ikemoto
23:38
There are no text messages at the moment, but perhaps in the future.
Cyrus Ginwala
23:54
fantastic. I will use this feature for a weekly newsletter to the course reminding them to visit the site adn complete assignments
Christine Fogarty
24:32
direct msg is great cuz they don’t read my quickmails
Daniel Ciomek
25:02
Yes, but they don’t log into iLearn either. ;-)
Sandra Mitchell

Daniel Ciomek
27:07

Kenji Ikemoto
27:16
i like Assignment. I love the rubric feature.
Anna Eng
27:21
Can you send the same quick mail to multiple students (i.e click on all students who didn’t complete assignment and send them one msg?)
Kenji Ikemoto
27:47
@Anna Sure can. You can select from a list the students you want to Quickmail.
iLearn Help Desk 🐈
28:04
Anna: Quickmail and messages are two different functions
iLearn Help Desk 🐈
28:34
You can also send the same message to multiple people using the new messaging feature, but it’s more like a “group message” in something like facebook than a private message with the same message to multiple people
Anna Eng
28:37
I mean messaging from inside an assignment.
Joan Wong-Kure
28:44
Will this work with docs submitted in Pages?
Kenji Ikemoto
28:44
There’s also another new feature that Andrea and Heidi will show that asends reminders to students.
iLearn Help Desk 🐈
29:44
No, the assignment preview function only works with .docx, .pdf, and odt files
Cyrus Ginwala
30:18
this is great.
Kenji Ikemoto
31:02
If you’re using a Grading Sheet or Rubric that you built in the Assignment, it’ll appear on this preview thingy too.
Joan Wong-Kure
31:11
This is great!
jdaubenmier
31:21
went by fast but can get help later
Cyrus Ginwala
31:32
very nice new feature

BRB
Daniel Ciomek
35:45
If the tracking is for received a grade, does this apply to external activities, e.g. once I upload a grade it is marked as completed?
Joan Wong-Kure
36:44
Helpful for project-based courses
Kenji Ikemoto
36:49
@Daniel Activity completion only works on Resources and Activities in iLearn, not on a manual Gradebook item (that you might use for an outside assignment).
Daniel Ciomek
37:17
@Kenji OK, thanks.
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
37:24
If the activity appears on the course page, such as LTI activities, it will count
Daniel Ciomek
38:28
Love it, this is great fro quizzes!!
jdaubenmier
38:44
how do they get the message for reminders?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
38:49
It’s an email
jdaubenmier
38:49
an email?
jdaubenmier
38:53
ok thanks
jdaubenmier
39:20
it’s an automatic email, or do you craft the email?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
39:31
You type in what you want in the reminder when you set it up
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
39:36
There’s a textbox for it
Cyrus Ginwala
39:45
this is a great feature and i bet we'll see a general rise in student success in the courses which use it.
jdaubenmier
39:57
ok so I can write a more personable message ok
Kenji Ikemoto
40:06
Using Activity Completion in tandem with Reminders is perfect way to keep students on top of the tasks.
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
40:07
Correct. There will be a “default” message, but you can change it
jdaubenmier
40:19
ok great
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
41:36
Clarification: Restrict Access does NOT require activity completion to work
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
41:55
but Restrict Access works better if you do have Activity Completion turned on
Anna Eng
42:32
Can you monitor how much reading they have done or far in the file they have completed?
Kenji Ikemoto
42:33
Without Activity Completion, you just get restrict access based on date, grade, and group
Cyrus Ginwala
43:06
i've been teaching large (250+) Mus 120 on ilearn since ilearn was started on the campus. These new features are among the best improvements I've seen.
Daniel Ciomek
43:06
OK, all very helpful, couple of different angles to encourage / improve engagement. Will be interesting to see at the end of the Fall if the numbers have improved, e.g. missed quizzes…
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
43:20
@Anna it’s an all or nothing thing. You can see whether they’ve clicked on the link or not, but not how long they were on that particular resource
Anna Eng
43:55
Thanks
Kenji Ikemoto
44:39
@Anna In those cases, you may want to couple that reading Activity completion with a light assessment to check their comprehension. Lots of possibilities
Cyrus Ginwala
45:47
All my topic boxes are organized around doing the following in order: reading, watch video, practice quiz, take the quiz. the restrict access scaffolding will encourage students to complete all of these before the final step.
Kenji Ikemoto
46:02
@Cyrus These new features can have big impact in a large enrollment class like yours where students need to be more self-directed
Cyrus Ginwala
46:17
Agree
Tania Pollak
47:03
The survey tool will be great to help me during the semester. So glad that is available.
jdaubenmier
47:28
can you download the data in Excel, etc?
Cyrus Ginwala
47:35
Will students have confidence that feedback is anonymous?
Genie Stowers
47:47
Survey tool great for completely onoline courses to check-in mid-semester to see how things are going. Thanks!
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
47:58
Like anything else, it’s all on whether the students believe you or not
Daniel Ciomek
47:59
Is there a way to use this within the groupings to get some feedback on how groups are doing? Not like a full-blown CATME, but so that I could scan fro some red flag issues, a.k.a. disfunctional groups?
Genie Stowers
48:45
I missed the first part of this webinar-- will it be posted online after we are done?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
49:12
feedback works with groups, so you can filter the responses by group
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
49:21
groups (and groupings)
jdaubenmier
49:49
can you show how to set up the survey in learn?
Daniel Ciomek
49:54
Nice, might play with it then.
Daniel Ciomek
50:37
Lots of great improvements, especially for large online/hybrid classes.
Kenji Ikemoto
52:03
BTW, there is an export to Excel button when viewing the survey results
Joan Wong-Kure
53:03
Will I be able to import my rubrics?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
53:15
Import rubrics from where into what?
Daniel Ciomek
53:23
Any other changes to the gradebook? Is there a list of all new features (PDF)?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
53:38
Gradebook is more or less the same, just with the drawer on the side
Joan Wong-Kure
53:47
My rubrics on iLearn last semester….
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
54:01
In normal iLearn assignments or turnitin assignments?
Cyrus Ginwala
54:05
THanks you guys. This is all terrific. I'm waiting for one more feature: the gradebook dumps the course grades automatically into the registrar's site. I know there are bit challenges with this.
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
54:11
If normal iLearn assignments, when you copy the course over they should still be there
Joan Wong-Kure
54:12
Normal iLearn
Anna Eng
54:15
Can we have access to a Test iLearn Class a place where we can play and test out new features without it affecting our actual class?
Kenji Ikemoto
54:19
Here is the list of new features on the website (no PDF of it at the moment): http://at.sfsu.edu/blog/post/1412
Joan Wong-Kure
54:23
Ok thanks!
jdaubenmier
54:27
ok can you show where you go to download the feedback survey?
Cyrus Ginwala
54:38
is this chat archived as well?
Daniel Ciomek
54:39
one question. These iLearn reminders for classes, will they show up in the SF State mobile app?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
55:04
No. iLearn is not connected to the SF State mobile app
jdaubenmier
55:08
ok thanks
Kenji Ikemoto
55:24
The chat will be recorded along with this webinar.
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
55:24
Usage of the mobile app is way lower than some people on campus would like you to believe
Daniel Ciomek
55:30
;)
John Holland
55:46
Many students don’t see emails because iLearn emails go to their junk mail. Do you have a help file that teaches students learn how to work with their own junk filter settings.
Daniel Ciomek
56:05
Any plans on an iLearn mobile app?
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
56:12
Mr. Holland: That may actually be fixed this year. We’ve made some tweaks to how iLearn sends email
iLearn Help Desk 🐱
56:20
Daniel: Soon™
Cyrus Ginwala
56:29
one way I deal with the forwarding issue is to send a 'secret word' to them by email. and then adding that as a quiz question. if they haven't got the email, they can't complete the quiz questions
Genie Stowers
56:50
Cyrus, what a great idea! Will try it.
Kenji Ikemoto
56:58
nice idea Cyrus.
Cyrus Ginwala
57:31
it's also useful or hybrid courses, like mine, where some students dont' realize they need to come to live classes AND do the online component.
Christine Fogarty
57:46
thank you! very helpful
